A multi-tiered retaining wall system that tamed a steep hillside lot and created usable terraced garden spaces.
Project Overview
This Catalina Foothills property sat on a steep slope with a 12-foot grade change from the back door to the rear property line. Erosion during monsoon season was washing soil toward the foundation, and the homeowner had no usable yard space.
We engineered a three-tier retaining wall system using split-face concrete block with a natural stone veneer. Each wall is between 3 and 5 feet tall with proper drainage behind the walls using perforated pipe and gravel backfill.
The terraced levels created three distinct flat areas: an upper patio adjacent to the home, a mid-level garden bed for native desert plants, and a lower gravel pad with a sitting area overlooking the mountain views.
Before & After
Before: A steep, eroding hillside with no usable outdoor space. Monsoon runoff carved deep channels in the slope, depositing mud against the home's foundation. The homeowner couldn't even walk safely to the back fence.
After: Three clean, level terraces connected by integrated stone steps. The walls feature a stacked-stone veneer that blends with the natural Catalina Foothills landscape. Strategic landscape lighting highlights the wall faces and path edges at night.
